This is a school where almost all of the students qualify for free lunch. It is soo awesome to see these kids and their parents enjoying a family afternoon, appreciating the simple games and candy. Last year a local police officer had a trunk. This year we had two police car trunks AND the Bomb Squad truck as a "trunk"!! Of course, they passed out fire balls as their candy LOL. It was so cool! And great to see the kids high 5'ing and fist-bumping the officers, and getting their pictures taken with them.

Much too warm for a jacket. Thankfully one of the trunks offered face painting, so she was a cat instead LOL.

Needless to say, it didn't take much arm twisting to convince me to help her out by cuddling the baby. Between Lexie, Ashlyn, and me, we kept her most of the afternoon! I think her big brother enjoyed getting some extra mommy snuggles and we ate up all the sweet baby snuggles!

It was a very fun day! We finished up with Apple Cider Donuts from the shop, yum!

Later that week my parents came up to replace our second garage door. The one we replaced in June was rotting away and definitely needed to be replaced. The other one was starting to rot but could have survived another year or so BUT the original doors were dark green and the replacement door was white so we wanted to go ahead and replace the second one so they'd match.

It's a big corn maze that I took the girls to when they were toddlers but we hadn't been back since we moved away the spring Lexie & Ashlyn turned 5. So, 10 years later, we came back!

The theory is that every time you come to a decision point there's a numbered sign and you can answer a question to know whether turn left or right but in actuality there are a lot of unmarked decision points. With two toddlers, that was a bit of a disaster. This year was much more fun. They were bound and determined to "beat" the maze so all I had to do was follow along and not worry about getting lost since, after all, we'd get out eventually. It took us about an hour to make it through the 12 acre maze, so we'll call it a success :) We also enjoyed the activities they had like the "hamster wheel" (similar to the ones at Paulus Orchard except those weren't built into a "house' they traveled back and forth on a track, which was more fun.

There was a group of boys playing football on it at one point. But they did pretty good at not plowing into other people so everyone had fun :) Can't believe even my "baby" is too tall for the "little kid" jump pillow now!

I had assumed, based on the website, that they would show us routes and hiding places that were documented as having been used in the Underground railroad, or at least were strongly suspected of having been used, but in reality, the original owners of Woodlawn Manor were slave owners so, in a community that was predominantly Quaker, and therefore anti-slavery, they chose the one site known to NOT have been sympathetic to slaves, as the starting point of their tour. It was mostly just a hike through the woods, and meadows, stopping occasionally for the tour guide to talk about how things might have been, and tell stories of specific slaves who escaped (but in most cases went nowhere near the area where we were). It was interesting, just not what I was expecting, and I didn't feel it was worth the price. The tour ended at the site of the historic Sandy Spring that the town is named after. Land development in recent years has re-routed the spring so it no longer flows from it's historic point, but the monument is still there. We then hiked back at our own pace, and visited the small museum that is a part of Woodlawn Manor.

On our way back to mom & dad's, we stopped in Gaithersburg to walk around a lake there. We didn't make it very far around the lake because the Hero Dogs organization was outside a restaurant soon after we started. They had dogs from a 7 week old puppy up to a 3 yr old ready to be placed. And were happy to let us love on their dogs, and have those old enough to have at least started the training process show off their "tricks". The dogs are trained to do things like pull a wheelchair or crutches over to you (which involves training them to pull without shaking their head like dogs instinctively do) pick up your keys or their leash, open and close drawers and cupboards . . . and they are also trained to help with anxiety. So if the trainer tapped his foot like someone might do subconsciously if they were worried, the dog would put her paw on his foot to calm him. When the trainer put his hands up to his face like he was scared or depressed, she jumped up into his face to get his attention. It was really interesting and the dogs were all super sweet :)

This never gets old! Since it was the weekend it was busier than we're used to, but each of the girls got to feed at least one calf. Ashlyn was frustrated that the calf she really wanted to feed (an adorable, TINY, Jersey calf) someone else had "claimed" but then just put the bottle in the "bottle holder" and stood there watching it eat.

Rodney joined us at my parents' house Saturday night and Sunday we headed down to his mom's house to visit with her and Rodney's sister and brother-in-law.

In other October news, all three girls joined our homeschool co-op's Chorus, so we're immersed in the Christmas songs they're learning. Little Bit is once again taking art classes twice a month, and we're hosting an American Girl Club once a month. Lexie & Ashlyn joined the tween/teen book club at co-op which meets once a month . . . so we're staying busy.

Other schoolish stuff this fall:

Little Bit is enjoying Waldorf Essential's Second Grade Curriculum (adapted to fit our eclectic style, of course)

Lexie and Ashlyn chose a "Who Dun It" writing course for this year. We're having fun reading classic mystery books and watching classic mystery shows while they plan out the "who dun it" novel they will complete by the end of the course.

We've cycled back around to Ancient History, using Story of the World Vol 1 as our spine. The older girls are digging deeper into the more "scholarly"books on the topic and I get to hear tidbits of what they read. I had figured we'd just use the Saint and hero stories included in the Waldorf Essentials curriculum for Little Bit's history, but she is enjoying picture books related to what her older sisters are learning about Ancient History.

Lexie continues to be fascinated by genetics and read horribly long books on the topic :)

We're finishing up the Little House series of audio books in the car, in between CDs related to Ancient History.

We're introducing Little Bit to the earlier Harry Potter books. We're all enjoying listening to the audiobook of the Sorcerer's Stone for bedtime, along with audiobooks for the teen book club and/or the Who Dun It course.

So . . . we got home from our epic Little House trip in late September and spent the rest of the month getting settled back into our normal routines. Tracy, the cat who's been banished to the front porch for repeatedly peeing everywhere but the litterboxes, was very glad to have us home again! Daddy wasn't willing to go hang out on the porch and give her love. Of course, 5 seconds after I took this picture she BIT my toe because I wasn't giving her ENOUGH attention! Silly cat.

Unfortunately, our beloved Carnegie Science Center was closed that week, so we didn't get to go there, but we did go to the Pittsburgh Children's Museum. Lexie and Ashlyn have "aged out" of it for the most part (I think someone their age who had never been there would still find it interesting, but after going so often when they were younger they mostly just found a corner and read a book. Little Bit still enjoyed most of it though. Painting, playing with water, and checking out the new (awesome) chairs they have in the "garage". These chairs are soo cool! I went hunting online to find them. I did, but they're over $700 each, which is beyond absurd for a hunk of plastic!!! Here's hoping someone makes a cheap knock-off LOL.

We also got lots of swimming time while we were in Pittsburgh. Little Bit hasn't had as many opportunities as her sisters did to practice swimming since she's been tall enough to be in the pool without floaties, so this was a wonderful opportunity. She definitely took some solid steps toward being more comfortable in the water. Wish we'd had longer.
The next day we went to a small zoo near where Rodney was working. It was overpriced for what it was, but we had a fun day. They want you to buy food to feed the animals (can't bring in your own baby carrots, have to buy a bag from them for $4! I don't even know how much the bucket of "nuggets" were. After what I'd paid to get in, I wasn't paying anything extra. BUT because most people do, the animals tend to come running up to the fence in hopes of being fed, so we could see the animals closer than most zoos.
Little Bit was over-the-moon :)

They also had "baby animal feeding time". There were several young animals in the pen (a Sabu, and I don't remember what else) but only the camels were still being bottle fed. They definitely knew when it was feeding time. So cute! Little Bit said the camels are easier to feed than calves. They don't butt at the bottles like the calves do. So all in all, it was a fun day :)
When we got home, Little Bit had a fun surprise! One of my parents' "National Park friends" is a geologist and posts pictures of rocks and minerals on facebook every day. When we were on our motorhome trip, mom was showing those pictures to Little Bit, and let the friend know that her granddaughter enjoyed his pictures. He asked if he could send her some rocks and they had arrived when we got home from Pittsburgh! She was very excited! It was really cool! A box of rocks, each marked with what it is and where it's from!!!
While we were traveling, we stopped at a Trader Joe's and they were sampling their Tomato Feta Soup. We all liked it, even Ashlyn, who typically doesn't like tomato soup. So when we got home, I went online looking for a copycat recipe. And couldn't find one. I did, however, find the list of ingredients in their soup. I love using my Instant Pot for lunch. I can get everything in and then go back to doing school with the girls while it cooks. So I looked at different recipes and combined ideas and tweaked things, and considered the ingredients in Trader Joe's Soup and here's what I came up with. I'm not going to call this a copycat of Trader Joe's because I honestly don't have a very clear memory of what it tasted like (and since there aren't any Trader Joe's stores anywhere near here, I can't buy some to compare), regardless, we all liked this soup and I'll be adding it to our lunch rotation!

INGREDIENTS:
1/4 c butter
1 lg onion,chopped
handful of baby carrots, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
3 28 oz cans whole peeled tomatoes*
1 Tbsp each: dried basil, dried parsley, dried oregano, chili powder
2 bay leaves
1 c whole milk
salt to taste
Crumbled Feta cheese

* I substituted 4 c cubed fresh tomatoes for one can

Place butter in instant pot and push the Saute button. Once butter is melted, saute onions and carrots until soft. Add garlic and tomatoes (If using all fresh tomatoes you might need to add up to a cup of water or broth. The canned whole tomatoes had plenty of liquid in them, and we prefer thicker soups). Add seasoning and bay leaves. Press cancel to turn off the saute feature. Lock lid in place and make sure pressure valve is closed. Turn on manual for 5 minutes (high pressure). Allow to pressure to naturally release. Puree soup until smooth with immersion blender (or in batches in a regular blender). Stir in milk and salt to taste.

To serve, top each bowl with a spoonful of crumbled feta.
Between chance of rain and the weekend's protests being in that area we weren't sure we were going to be able to but today was sunny (and HOT) and things were quiet in the area, at least during the day, I haven't looked at news to see if there were any more protests this evening.

When my parents were here this summer there were long lines and you had to order tickets ahead but with school started, we had no waiting other than the unavoidable wait so everyone can board the pods at the same time.

We rode up in a little pod. Little Bit was rather freaked out. Lexie and Ashlyn loved watching out the window at the infrastructure of the arch. They decided it would be the perfect setting for a Cyberman attack on Dr Who.

I thought Little Bit would be over her nervousness once we were at the top but she was still nervous. Her sisters were great at distracting her by pointing out various things out the windows but as soon as she wasn't distracted she was nervous again. The views were awesome:

I wasn't concerned she'd really freak out when we went down because it's faster. Takes 4min to go up and only 3 to go down. But she actually liked the faster speed, whew!

Once we were back down, the museum is closed for renovations but Little Bit and Dad got their passport stamps

We finished our day, and our time in St Louis, with supper at the Old Spaghetti Factory! Yum!!!

posted from Bloggeroid

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16356828915552029222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793572361513833353.post-43731985958948801462017-09-18T23:37:00.001-04:002017-09-18T23:37:43.855-04:00U S Grant National Historic Site
Today we went to US Grant's National Historic Site.

This site is the farm that was owned by Grant's wife's family, the Dents. Interestingly the house is called White Haven after Julia's father's family home in MD. Apparently the house was never white, but the awful green approximates the color Grant chose when he took over ownership.

We toured the house and out buildings including the summer kitchen

And chicken coop

The winter kitchen was in the basement. While the main living spaces were all plastered and finished, the ceiling beams in the kitchen were logs with the bark still on.

The large horse stables that Grant designed and had built is now a museum. This quote amused me.

And, of course, the girls and my mom earned their Junior Rangers.

We were planning to also visit "Grant's Farm" across the street from the historic site. It has the Anheuser-Busch Cleidsdales and other animals. But unfortunately, is only open weekends this time of year, so we'll have to skip it.

Next we enjoyed a yummy "lunch" of frozen custard from Ted Drewes. YUM

posted from Bloggeroid

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16356828915552029222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793572361513833353.post-21601100955915280622017-09-16T23:29:00.001-04:002017-09-16T23:29:20.388-04:00Rocky Ridge Farm
Today was our last little house site of the trip.

Rocky Ridge Farm is the farm Laura and Amanzo bought when they moved from De Smet, ND to Mansfield, MO when their daughter, Rose, was 7. They lived here for the rest of their lives.

Today was Wilder Day, so it was a lot more crowded than any of the other sites have been. As I suspected, the museum here has most of the actual things that exist from her life. Unfortunately, they don't allow pictures inside the museum. So I'll just tell you about the things I was most excited about lol.

Pa's fiddle, obviously!!!! After all the entire point of our timing ever since Labor day has been based on being here TODAY to hear the fiddle!

Ma's pearl handled pen.
The lace that Ida Brown slipped into Laura's hand as a wedding present.
The little china box Laura got off the Christmas tree on Walnut Grove.

Also was fun to learn that Rose shared my love of BIG coffee cups and see a couple of hers.

After the museum we went up to the farm house to tour it.

When they first bought the farm there was a one room cabin. They lived there the first winter then added a second room. The following spring they moved to new room to it's current location and added a second room and an attic bedroom. That became the first phase of this farmhouse.

Again, no photos were allowed inside. The original 2 rooms eventually became the kitchen, with counters built extra low so they were easy for 4 ft 11 in. (or 5ft depending what you read) Laura. And a dining room with built in storage and a pass thru window from the kitchen. Later they added a bedroom, music room, and parlor with a very cool library nook to the main floor and a proper staircase and another bedroom upstairs.

After we toured the farm house a shuttle took us to the rock house.

After Rose was grown and successful she purchased a house plan or kit (depending who you ask lol) from the Sears catalog. She had the rock house built for her parents because she thought they needed a more modern house.

Again, no pictures allowed inside. It's a cute little house. Love the big living room windows and there are great built in shelves and wall niches throughout. After about 7 years Laura and Almanzo moved back to the farm house because this house didn't feel like home. I can't say that I blame them. The farmhouse has a bigger, nicer kitchen and the awesome library nook. And while they were living in the rock house Rose lived in the farm house and added a bathroom on so now it had indoor plumbing too. They spent the rest of their lives in the farm house. They used the rock house as a rental for awhile then sold it.

(Random picture of Little Bit)

Next we took the shuttle into town where there were street vendors and other festivities going on. Nothing too exciting . . .we did go to the town historic society museum. Saw a few more of Laura's things there, again no pictures allowed. As Ashlyn pointed out, while I totally understand no flash, the Smithsonian allows pictures why do all these little museum think they're more important? I especially found it absurd at the historic society where they provided free coffee that you could drink while wandering through the exhibits. So obviously the no pictures rule wasn't to keep from damaging historic items. Anyway . . . Lexie ended up talking to a lady whose parents knew the Wilders. Her mother worked at the bank. Said Laura took care of all their financed. And her father did some electrical work for them. Said Laura tried to tell him how to do the wiring and he said later that if he'd done what she said it would have caused a fire.

After lunch we went back to the farm house to see Pa's fiddle played! The man who played it said it was what was known as a seed fiddle because Pa won it for buying enough seed. Another site we were at, I don't remember which, said nobody knows where Pa got his fiddle, so nice to hear at least one theory lol. Obviously it wasn't a very fancy fiddle but it's held up well. He said the only thing they've changed is putting new tuning keys on it. I assume they've also replaced the strings, probably multiple times.

I also took a video of him playing but the app I'm using won't let me add a video so I'll do it as a separate post straight in blogger.

After he played Pa's fiddle they had the final part of the fiddle-off that had been going on all day. That was fun to watch.

And thus ends our Little House tour. The one major site we didn't go to was the Wilder home in NY. We're hoping to hit it during another trip to Boston and/or PEI.

In the morning we'll start heading north east with stops along the way.

posted from Bloggeroid

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16356828915552029222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793572361513833353.post-66209111755950887912017-09-16T23:25:00.002-04:002017-09-16T23:25:44.188-04:00Video of Pa's Fiddle

In the book, Laura says it was 40 miles from Independence but actually it's only 12 miles. She also says she was 6 when actually she was 3.

The only thing original to the site is the well that Pa hand dug. They "capped" with concrete. I really wish they had either capped it with plexiglass or just put a fence around it, or both, so you could still see in it.

The original cabin is gone. Something I read earlier this week online indicated that the reproduction cabin is built on the original footprint of Pa's cabin but the lady there today said she thinks it was actually closer to the well, so who knows. This trip is definitely making me want to read Laura's autobiography, Pioneer Girl, because so much information seems contradictory.

The cabin has been damaged to the point that they don't let you in it but you can look in to see it set up like Laura describes it in the books.
I ended not taking many pictures because I was busy helping Little Bit with her Junior Ranger.

It was an interesting park, and the Junior Ranger did a good job of making us go over the whole thing.

I think we would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't SO hot! There's something more . . .intense about the heat out here. And the northern part of our trip got us ready for fall, making the heat here seem even worse.
The volunteer at the desk made the kids happy by just giving them their badges, and Civil war trading cards, without making them say the pledge. He also took time to go through the trading cards with Little Bit and tell her a little about each one.

posted from Bloggeroid

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16356828915552029222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793572361513833353.post-43051748995734606932017-09-13T23:53:00.001-04:002017-09-13T23:53:56.201-04:00Long Day
Today was by far our longest day so far on this trip. Last night we parked in a parking lot at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. A friend of my parents who lives in the area had told them the college had RV hook ups and arranged with the college for us to park there what she, and therefore we, didn't realize is that the hook ups are in a regular parking lot on campus with cars parked all around them. We got parked by waiting till the lot cleared out some in the evening. So . . .this morning my dad woke up a little after 7 and realized the lot was filling up and we could get parked in. We woke Little Bit up enough to move her from the floor to the sofa, got everything ready to go, including slides pulled in, then woke the big girls enough to get them to turn the other direction in their bunks so their feet were pointed to the front, not their heads, and pulled out. Dad stopped at the entrance of the lot to hook the car on the back and while he was doing that, literally minutes after we pulled out of our spot, someone came and parked in a spot that would have blocked us in! Drove a few miles to a Walmart lot and stopped to let kids finish waking up and all of us make our coffee and eat breakfast then headed to the Homestead Memorial national park site. Spent the morning there . . .

Not surprisingly, the homestead memorial is on the prairie. It has its own kind of beauty but the girls and I are in agreement that we have no desire to live on the prairie. So flat and hot and . . . Flat!
This was in the eclipse's path of totality, so they still had stuff about that here. My favorite was the series of small quilts they had showing the stages. So gorgeous!
All 3 girls got their Junior Rangers but as usual, Ashlyn didn't want her picture taken.

They had a "Not so Junior Ranger" book here do mom did that one and got a different pin.

We left Homestead around 1pm and ate while dad drove into Kansas to the Pony Express Museum there. It's small, but very cool!

The original pony express stop for this area is still on it's original location! It was used as a home until the 1940s. The interpreter at the museum said recently a woman in her 90s came to see the museum and said she had actually lived in this house! So cool!

Inside the original building they have a place where the show the different "layers" in the wall.

The building still has it's original floors and at some point in it's history someone flatten out tin cans and used them to patch the floor. Talk about using everything you had!
There was a telegraph key in the museum that you could try. Lexie taught Little Bit how to use it.
The people who lived in the wayside house when the pony express was in operation were German. This is s German Bible.

So we spent a couple hours there then decided to do a couple hours of driving to get closer to tomorrow's stop, Ft Scott. We found a campground that looked like it would work well but dad didn't have good cell reception there at the museum so we figured we'd drive a little bit then stop and dad could call and confirm they had a spot available. We discovered that cell service was spotty most everywhere and places to stop were minimal . . . By the time mom could call it was after hours and the recording gave no indication of if there was a way to stay there if you hadn't planned ahead. So, new plan . . . Found another campground, called and actually talked to a person. She said they did have a spot, so we drove to this campground (which happens to be in a town named "Peculiar" I've been making tons of jokes about that, the girls don't find me as funny as I find me lol).

Didn't get to the campground until after 8, then had to get parked, not an easy task to back a motorhome into a spot in the dark. Get leveled and hooked up . . . By then it was bedtime!

So today was our earliest time pulling out, by at least an hour, and our latest time parking, by probably 2 hours, first time parking after dark. Long day, and hard on dad, doing so much driving, a lot of it on 2 lane roads with quite a bit of wind. I'm proud of my girls for handling the uncertainty without complaining, and generally being great travelers.

This campground has laundry facilities and showers so I'm going to get laundry going in the morning and take a much needed shower (with so many of us, we have to be careful about water usage if we spend very long at sites without water hookup and/or a dump station. So, while the shower in the motorhome works fine, we've been conserving water so no showers since we left DeSmet Monday morning). And hopefully the kids will sleep in a bit.

posted from Bloggeroid

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16356828915552029222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793572361513833353.post-54637532457867441362017-09-10T22:53:00.001-04:002017-09-10T22:53:29.130-04:00De Smet Day 2
Today we stayed on the homestead and enjoyed all that it has to offer.
Nobody knows what happened to the original claim shanty that Pa built on the homestead but town records give us the dimensions so they built one the same size. This is the room the 4 girls shared after Pa added on the first addition (2 bedrooms). The "main room", that was the whole house for the first year, is twice the size of this bedroom.
We took a wagon ride out to a school house. Not on it's original site, and not where Laura taught, that one burned down and this was built in it's place and continued to be used until the 1960s.
Inside the kids dressed up in bonnets and pinafores. And a retired teacher told about school back then.
Little Bit got a turn "driving" on the way back.

When we got back from the wagon ride the big girls had to love on the horses.
Little Bit wanted to drive the pony cart so Lexie rode along.

Ashlyn took a turn driving the pony cart too but I didn't get a picture. She said the guy told her that pony doesn't have to be tied to the rail between rides, she stays put EXCEPT during the summer they stop at 6:30. That pony can tell time and right at 6:30 if she isn't tied up she'll start toward home lol.
The pony waiting, not tied, between rides. I love how she rests her chin on the rail.
Lexie's turn riding the horse.
Ashlyn's turn. Notice the colt waiting for her to come love on him some more.

Even though the Ingalls never lived in a dugout in SD, there's a replica of one here on the homestead. Based on the indentation left by the one on Plum Creek, I think this is pretty accurate as far as size.

I knew it was small, but the thing that struck me when I went inside was that somehow it being dark and having dark, solid, thick walls made me feel a LOT more claustrophobic in the dugout than I have in the various small cabins and shanties.

Shudder . . .even realizing that it would be warmer in winter and cooler in summer, I'm not sure I could stand to live there.

While the Ingalls' shanty is long gone, they do have a claim shanty from the time period that they moved to this property.

After we'd finished exploring Lexie decided to hang out on the front porch of the gift shop since their WiFi seems to ONLY work there. Later, I went looking for her and didn't see her on the porch at first, then I found her tucked into a corner of the buggy they have on the porch lol

And finally, one last cat picture. The cats are super friendly. This little guy had been "talking" to us then went over in the sun to sleep but instead of laying flat on the porch he decided to lay with his neck bent at a terribly uncomfortable angle against the planter leg. And promptly went to sleep like that.

There's a small "discovery center" in the park that had some craft stuff, dress up clothes, information on how to read Braille, and, Lexie's favorite, a treadle sewing machine to try!

After visiting the small museum where we'd taken the house tour, which had some awesome stuff but didn't allow pictures, we drove around De Smet to see the other locations.

The store building that Pa built, and the family lived in the first couple winters, was sold soon after. The new owner replaced Pa's wood building with this red brick building that's still standing.

Laura talks about Loftus store and it still exists. More tourist trap junk than general store now, but still a store.

The woman in Loftus store said during a renovation, some shoes, still in shoeboxes, from the 1800s were found in a corner of the attic. One of the shoes, and a box, are on display in the store.

We also drove by the church and cemetery where the family, except for Laura, is buried.

We drove by Laura and Almanzo's claim, now farm land.

Once we came back to the homestead things were winding down for the day but we did get to see a demonstration of twisting hay

Little Bit made a corncob doll (I gave up on pictures, another mom was blocking my view).

And we got to say hi to a pony and her baby before it started raining and we headed back to the motorhome for the evening.
Today was the first of our two days in De Smet, SD.

We got here yesterday afternoon and parked the motorhome in one of the spots right on Pa's homestead, now a museum, etc.

Little Bit had fun playing with the other kids who are staying here and all the kids had fun playing with some cats that apparently live here.
This morning we headed into town to tour the buildings that are there. They aren't open tomorrow, but the homestead is, so we'll see it then.
The Surveyor's house where they stayed their first winter in SD. Laura describes how big and fancy it was. It's a lot smaller than I expected! Especially considering they had up to 15 extra men staying with them. This is the original house, restored to similar to how it was in 1879/80, but moved from it's original location to a lot in town.

That area is known for its copper so there were some interesting copper formations in the museum.

Little Bit really liked the "rainbow" rocks

Probably the most "impressive" rock was the amethyst "column".

Also very cool, but couldn't get pictures, was a room with black lights that talked about how and why some rocks are bioluminescent, and showed them off. Gorgeous!

posted from Bloggeroid

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16356828915552029222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793572361513833353.post-14660100097898561072017-09-08T10:57:00.001-04:002017-09-08T10:57:39.503-04:00Pictured Rocks Boat Ride
The evening of our day at Pictured Rocks we went on a boat ride to see the rock cliffs. We'd been scheduled for earlier in the day but they cancelled that one because the water was too rough. They warned us this one might be rough too but it was lovely. Cold, but gorgeous!

I didn't keep track of the names of the various rocks so will just share the pictures here.
We all fell in love with this area and would love to come back and spend more time. The boat captain said they generally get over 200 inches of snow per winter so not sure I'd want to live there year round lol.

posted from Bloggeroid

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16356828915552029222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793572361513833353.post-926014108646642972017-09-08T10:48:00.001-04:002017-09-08T10:48:46.077-04:00Pictured Rocks National Park

There was also a buffalo coat like Pa wore when he waited out the blizzard on the creek bank. I wanted to take a picture of but the reflection on the glass case was too bad.

We also drove out to the dugout site. The creek picture above is from there.

It was smaller than I'd imagined.

We followed a walking trail near the dugout and were eaten alive by mosquitoes but the prairie flowers were pretty.

The church bell that Pa helped pay for was later sold to the Lutheran Church and is still being used so we stopped and took a picture of it. The book says Pa gave $3. The museum said he gave $26!

The girls and my mom earned their Junior Rangers which required driving through various parts of the park. As part of that we stopped by a cool covered bridge.

These dunes had big signs warning you not to climb down. People were doing it anyway and the ranger we talked to later said they end up having to rescue people frequently.

Then we moved on to the dunes you're allowed to climb. Little Bit, my mom, and Lexie climbed them. You can see Little Bit's bright pink skirt. They climbed on up out of sight but said it just kept going so they turned around.

Finally we headed back to the visitor center to get their Junior Ranger badges.
Yesterday we went to Pepin, WI, the town closest to where the Ingalls family lived in the big woods.

The museum is in town. It's small, and we had the place to ourselves.

This quilt belonged to Laura.

In the books, Laura doesn't go to school until they live on Plum Creek but based on the signs here, apparently she actually did go to school in Pepin. Her teacher was Anna Berry.
A replica of a farm wagon. Imagine packing everything for a family of 5 into this space and traveling across the prairie!

Another room had an area for kids to play. I love the kid sized cook stove!
There was a pump organ. They had the keyboard blocked so kids didn't mess with it. But the curator said she'd unlock it if we wanted to play it. Mom knew how it works, so she showed Ashlyn and Ashlyn played a couple songs.
There was a wardrobe of vintage clothes donated by people in Pepin. Lexie asked the curator if she could remove some of them to see them better. The curator said sure, just be careful. Lexie was giddy and spent the rest of her time there examining everything.

This cape had a note pinned to it saying it belonged to one of the Ingalls aunts.

After we left the museum we headed out to the actual site of the cabin.

The cabin, and woods, are long gone but they've built a replica.

Finally, we went down to the shore of Lake Pepin. There was a small beach area that we went down and waded. The shoreline is all beautiful rocks. No wonder Laura ripped her pocket trying to collect them all :)

We'd planned to stay in Pepin last night but couldn't get the campground to return our calls, and nobody at the affiliated hotel knew how to get ahold of the campground owner, so we gave up and drove an hour or so toward Walnut Grove before spending the night in a Walmart lot.
Yesterday was our first actual Laura Ingalls site on this trip. There isn't a book about the Ingalls family's time in Burr Oak, IA but they spent a year here between "On the Banks of Plum Creek" and "By the Shores of Silver Lake".
And on Thursday, August 24, we started.

The girls and I had the car loaded, ready to leave first thing that morning for my parents' house. We got there, loaded our stuff into the motorhome, helped mom and dad finish loading their stuff and headed out.

We drove from WV to PA to OH that day. Got to the campground and got set up and fixed supper. By the time we'd cleaned up from supper it was bedtime.

Friday we went to the First Ladies Library and toured Mrs. McKinley's house. The girls and Mom got their Junior Rangers.
The exhibit was reproductions of some of the first ladies' inauguration gowns which would be more exciting if we hadn't recently gone to Smithsonian and seen all the originals. What was interesting is apparently a perfume company made smaller reproductions of many of the gowns to use in their dept store displays and there were a bunch of those on display.

McKinley's house (technically Mrs. McKinley's sister's house but the McKinleys lived there) was interesting. A 3rd floor was added later and they put some odd sized closet doors in to accommodate stairwells and roof lines.
