Book Review and GIVEAWAY: Rufus and Ryan Go to Church by Kathleen Long Bostrom

~ ~ ~ ~ Congratulations to Leigh, winner of this giveaway!!!~ ~ ~ ~

Lately I've been working with Little Bit on being quieter in church.  Our church has a balcony where parents with young children can sit, and there are windows between it and the main sanctuary, so that allows little ones to be . . . little . . . abit more than most church scenarios, and I appreciate that, however, as she gets older, I know she CAN whisper, and such, so we are working on it.

Which meant that the chance to review Rufus and Ryan Go to Church, by Kathleen Long Bostrom came at JUST the right time!

This is an adorable board book for children age 2-5, available from Ideals Books for $7.99.

Preschooler, Ryan explains to his stuffed monkey, Rufus, what happens as they attend church on a Sunday morning.

Little Bit and I settled down in the chair to read this book together. Since we go to church on Sabbath (Saturday), I made that adjustment to the story as I read it. The other thing is, at Ryan's church, there is juice and cookies after church. Since our church doesn't do that, we talked about how different churches do things differently, and I likened it to the potluck lunch that we participate in at the church a couple times a month.

I think Little Bit's "review" is summed up by her response when we finished reading the book. "Read it again Mommy!" I think we read the book three times in a row that first day.

If you have a little one who needs a reminder about how to sit quietly in church, this is a fun little book to help them  understand, and now you have the chance to win your own copy.

I put together packs of activities in pencil pouches and we rotate through them weekly. We'd love a new book to add to our Sabbath bag!

I have a strong heart for my children to hear the meat of the Word. However, I want to respect and understand that Adonai made them the age they are, and that this is a wonderful time. I want to give them roots in the Word, and wings to learn and explore at their imagination level. Thanks!

My kids are much older than this, but I have a niece and nephew in this age group. They're both a handful, so I'm sure this would be helpful for them.

We never really had to worry about the kids when they were little. The church we went to at the time had a nursery or children's church, so it was never an issue. However, now that they are older, I wonder about the wisdom of having children away from parents during the service.

We have had all 5 of our kids in church from the first day. We feel it important that they learn to listen and love the Word of God from a very early age. We encourage our kids to sit in church by giving them coloring pages and crayons and other small books to look at. If they misbehave we do not take them to nursery, we take them someplace like the foyer or somewhere else "boring". We do not want to encourage our kids to act up because they want to go someplace "fun". By the age of 2-2 1/2 our kids sit thru church with no complaint!!

Thanks for the offer. My youngest absolutely loves books!

other than crayons and blank paper... I have not done much. My daughter's sabbath school teacher gave her some sticks that bend and are flexible to build things with the other day. I'm looking forward to the day she will be able to listen and undertand the sermon.

I try to pack Sabbath bags with coloring books, crayons and a little tub of play dough (to play with on the back of the coloring book so as not to make a mess!). My little one still gets antsy from time to time, but it gets better each week. We would love to read this book together!

I take felts, crayons, sketch pads, and lots of stickers to church to keep my four year old busy. Just giving him a stack of stickers and letting him stick them on me, can keep him quiet and busy for a long time.

We keep my 2.5 year old in through the singing and I don't request that he be quiet. If he wants to sing or clap or dance, I encourage it.
